What Credit Cards Are Accepted at Costco?

If you've ever rolled up to a Costco checkout with a full cart and the wrong card in your wallet, you already know this matters. Costco has one of the most specific payment policies of any major retailer — and understanding it before you shop saves real frustration.

Costco Only Accepts Visa Credit Cards

This is the core fact: Costco warehouses in the United States accept only Visa credit cards. Mastercard, Discover, and American Express credit cards are not accepted in-store. This has been Costco's policy since 2016, when the warehouse chain ended its long-standing exclusive partnership with American Express and switched to an exclusive deal with Visa.

That means if your go-to rewards card runs on a different network, it won't work at the register — regardless of the bank that issued it or the rewards it earns.

What About Debit Cards and Other Payment Methods?

The Visa-only rule applies specifically to credit cards. Costco accepts a broader range of payment types for non-credit transactions:

Payment MethodAccepted In Warehouse?
Visa credit cards✅ Yes
Mastercard credit cards❌ No
American Express credit cards❌ No
Discover credit cards❌ No
Visa debit cards✅ Yes
Mastercard debit cards✅ Yes
PIN-based debit (any network)✅ Yes
Costco Shop Cards (gift cards)✅ Yes
Cash✅ Yes
Checks✅ Yes (personal checks accepted)
EBT/SNAP✅ Yes (for eligible items)

So if you have a Mastercard debit card, you're fine — the restriction only applies to credit cards, not debit.

Costco.com Has Different Rules

Here's where it gets slightly more flexible: Costco's website accepts Visa, Mastercard, and Discover credit cards for online purchases. American Express is still not accepted even online.

If you prefer shopping on Costco.com or through the Costco app, Mastercard and Discover cardholders have more options. The in-warehouse restriction is stricter than the online policy.

The Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi

Costco has a co-branded credit card issued through Citi — the Costco Anywhere Visa® Card — which is accepted everywhere Visa is accepted, including Costco warehouses. It's a rewards card designed around Costco members' spending habits, with category-based cash back on gas, dining, travel, and Costco purchases.

This card is only available to Costco members, and applying for it involves a standard credit card application with Citi. Approval depends on the applicant's credit profile, not just membership status.

It's worth noting that this card earns reward certificates redeemable at Costco — not flexible cash back — so how useful those rewards are depends on how often and how much you shop there.

Why Does Costco Have This Restriction? 💳

Retailers and card networks negotiate interchange fees — the percentage of each transaction that goes to the card issuer. Exclusive network deals allow large retailers to negotiate lower fees in exchange for routing all transactions through one network. Costco's volume is enormous, which gives it leverage to negotiate favorable terms with Visa.

For shoppers, the business rationale doesn't change the practical reality: only Visa credit cards work at the register.

Which Visa Cards Qualify?

Any Visa-branded credit card works at Costco — you don't need the co-branded Costco card. That includes:

  • Visa rewards cards from any bank
  • Visa cash back cards
  • Visa travel cards
  • Visa secured cards
  • Visa business credit cards

The Visa logo on the front of the card is what matters for in-store purchases. The issuing bank (Chase, Wells Fargo, Bank of America, Capital One, etc.) is irrelevant to whether Costco accepts the card.

What This Means If You're Choosing a Card for Costco Shopping 🛒

If Costco is a regular part of your spending and you want to maximize rewards there, the relevant question isn't just which card has the best rewards — it's which card has the best rewards on a Visa network.

A few variables shape that decision:

  • Spending categories: Do you buy gas, groceries, or warehouse goods most? Different cards reward different categories.
  • Redemption flexibility: Some Costco-specific rewards only pay out once per year as a certificate; other Visa cards offer more flexible redemption.
  • Annual fees: Rewards cards with higher fees may or may not justify themselves depending on your annual Costco spend.
  • Credit profile: The best-rewarding Visa cards typically require good to excellent credit for approval.

None of those variables are uniform across shoppers — and that last one, your credit profile, determines what's actually available to you.

One More Thing: You Still Need a Costco Membership

Payment policy aside, Costco requires an active membership to shop in-store. Non-members can shop on Costco.com for most items, but warehouse access requires a paid membership. The credit card you carry only matters once you're already a member.

Understanding what cards are accepted is the easy part. Knowing which Visa card makes the most sense given your credit history, current utilization, and rewards preferences — that's where your specific financial picture becomes the deciding factor.
